Paraguayan Elbows Cricket Club
2008's Big Fixture was a re-run of 2007's defeat at Downe
Given the paucity (age) of the Elbows' bowling attack, keeping the hosts down to 195 for 5 in their 40 overs was something of an achievement with tea greatly looked forward to pretty well from the off. It started well for the Elbows, in fact, with Benjamin Watts (7-4-9-1) bowling one of the openers before the middle order settled in before a brace of run-outs (including teenaged threat Marcus Parfett for 1) and a rare Veraf/Brushett (scorebook error: who took this wicket?!) wicket joined an even-rarer Deller stumping (off Philbrook!) in the scorebook.
It was good to see spin twins (!) Boyle and Brushett operating in tandem, even if the umpires were kept busy signalling wides and fours as the Downe batsmen filled their boots more quickly than Philbrook filled his plate at tea.
After tea it was a different story: i.e. we batted and wickets fell more frequently. Whilst Benjamin was again unluckily out, this time for 1, and Brush for 5, a backbone reminiscent of old days was provided by a glorious 52 from Deacs going in at number 3, and an unbeaten captain's innings from Graeme Sr for 63*. These half-centuries were punctuated by a stubborn cameo from very-old-Elbonian Wayne Smethurst and a couple of trademark lusty blows from Veraf.
Sadly, in the autumnal gloaming, the going got harder and harder and as the sun set over Biggin Hill, behind the trees, the target receded into the distance quicker than a Kalifa full toss. The Elbows finished up a respectable 163-7 with Philbrook and Boyle frustrated in their desire to reach the crease. All of which was rapidly forgotten as we repaired back to the Queen's Head where the sadly-unavailable Ron Kalifa miraculously appeared with Gill to extend the reunion. Which was nice.
Thanks to Martin Watts for bringing Benjamin again and standing as ump in Colin's absence and thanks also to John Knock, president of Leigh CC, for scoring. Cathy took the team pic..
